Let’s imagine you’re scheduled for surgery. The operating room has been prepared for your procedure. The room is cool, brightly lit, clean and organized. All instruments are sterilized and laid out on a tray the way the surgeon prefers. All monitoring equipment is calibrated and functioning correctly. The surgical team knows why they’re there, and very importantly, why you’re there. A plan of action is in place.

But…

What if your anesthesiologist guesses the correct dosage of anesthesia and doesn’t administer enough?

What if your surgeon speaks only Japanese but the rest of the team doesn’t?

What if your surgeon can’t decide which scalpel to use and randomly picks one he hopes will work? Eeny meeny miny moe.

YIKES! This surgery is a crap shoot. Maybe it’ll work out. Maybe it won’t. But no matter what the outcome, it’s potentially a disaster in the making. OK, I admit, these are extreme scenarios. Let’s hope none of us ever experience any of them. But let’s use them as an analogy to explain what can happen if you are unfamiliar with the “instruments” of your personality.

What if in your world, you’re too much of something or not enough?

What if others don’t perceive what you put out there in the way you intend or expect to be perceived?

What if you have a terrific set of “personality tools” at your fingertips, but never master how and when to use them?

You are setting yourself up for disappointment, disconnection and dismal outcomes, whether personal or business. For both to move along as well as they possibly can, it is your responsibility to figure out who you are. Are you a soft breeze or a gusty wind? Are you a marathoner or a sprinter? Are you the ocean or the bay? Whatever the case, until you understand what makes you who you are, life and business will always be a crap shoot. Some of you may enjoy the unpredictability of that adventure. However, I have seen—more often than not—that eventually, not understanding yourself and how you affect others causes confusion, doubt, conflict and tempered success.

The secret weapon for success in EVERY area of life is MASTERY OF SELF.

I urge you, get acquainted with that amazing person who stares back at you in the mirror when you look. Identify your natural gifts. Use them. Be honest about traits you need to refine or harness. Control them. Observe how their expression affects those around you. Make adjustments. Get help if you get stuck.* To what end? A deliberate, self-directed life that delivers internal peace, richer relationships, unforgettable impact and realization of your dreams.
